The St. Louis Cardinals have little margin left in the postseason race, while the Pittsburgh Pirates face an even narrower road. The Pirates enter the finale with the cleaner pitching plan, provided their defense keeps routine contact routine.
Cardinals need the good version of Liberatore
Matthew Liberatore is listed by MLB.com to start Sunday on conventional rest. His breaking stuff produced swings and misses in his latest outing, but mistakes in hittable areas turned complicated innings into heavy damage.
The Cardinals can challenge Braxton Ashcraft with Alec Burleson, JJ Wetherholt and Nolan Gorman from the left side. That group must avoid rolling over his sinker and make him elevate, because easy early-count grounders are exactly what keep his pitch total under control.
The lineup is also unsettled. Blaze Jordan has been placed on the injured list with a left ankle sprain, Everson Pereira remains out, and Masyn Winn is unavailable with a thumb issue, leaving the Cardinals short of their preferred mix of contact, speed and defense.
Relief depth is the larger concern if Liberatore encounters early traffic. The Cardinals needed substantial bullpen coverage again Saturday, while injuries to Andre Pallante, Hunter Dobbins and Peter Strzelecki have thinned the bridge to closer Riley O'Brien.
Pirates can let Ashcraft set the tempo
Braxton Ashcraft is firmly listed to start for the Pirates, and his recent adjustment has been simple enough to fit on a scout's index card: more sinkers, more strikes, less hunting for the perfect chase pitch. That approach has produced quicker outs and allowed him to work deeper without wasting bullets.
The Pirates can give Liberatore a right-handed contact problem through Nick Gonzales, Jared Triolo, Jacob Gonzalez and Rafael Flores Jr. Bryan Reynolds can also hit from the right side, while Oneil Cruz and Brandon Lowe carry enough damage potential to remain threats despite the left-on-left matchup.
Ryan O'Hearn remains sidelined by a significant quadriceps strain, removing an important left-handed middle-order bat. Even so, Cruz's return restores power and speed, while Jake Mangum can pressure an unsettled Cardinals defense without needing barrel contact every time.
The Pirates' bullpen has greater role depth, although its exact Sunday availability depends on the final workload from Saturday. Ashcraft supplying length would keep Don Kelly away from the tired portion of the relief chart and preserve the stronger leverage options for the late innings.
Busch loses some of its usual bite in the heat
First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 PM ET under full afternoon sun, with temperatures around 90°F and climbing. A south wind of roughly 10–15 mph should offer some push toward left and left-center, making elevated fastballs and hanging breaking balls less forgiving than on a typical Busch Stadium afternoon.
The park's broad gaps still reward outfield range, and both clubs have committed avoidable defensive mistakes in the series. Rain is unlikely; the real physical test is handling consecutive hot afternoons with clean innings and efficient pitching.
Ashcraft's length tilts the whole pitching map
The Pirates' edge is not confined to the listed starters. Ashcraft's improved command gives him a better chance to cover meaningful innings, while Liberatore's damaging misses could expose an injured and recently taxed Cardinals relief bridge.
The platoon shape also favors the Pirates, who can emphasize right-handed contact without stripping the lineup of its main power threats. The Cardinals have fewer lineup answers available and must solve a sinker-heavy starter before reaching a bullpen with more possible leverage combinations.
Ashcraft is beyond his previous professional innings high, so extreme heat or a stressful frame could bring a conservative hook. The Pirates are also finishing a season-long road trip, which makes the moneyline safer than asking them to cover the run line.
