Giants — Reds: Right-handed bats can punish an unstable Whisenhunt

Giants: an unsteady starter and an overworked bullpen

The Giants' weekend in Boston did more damage than a sweep. Saturday's ninth-inning collapse and Sunday's short start left the relief group stretched, with Sam Hentges working on consecutive days and JT Brubaker carrying a multi-inning load.

Carson Whisenhunt is listed as the probable starter after getting an extra recovery day. The left-hander has looked like two different pitchers: gritty enough to work deep against the Astros, then hard hit against the Guardians when his fastball command flattened out. His changeup can neutralize right-handed bats, but only if hitters have to respect the fastball first.

The lineup also carries real uncertainty. Willy Adames and Victor Bericoto are awaiting MRI results after Sunday exits, and Matt Chapman remains on the injured list, according to MLB.com. Rafael Devers, Bryce Eldridge and Jung Hoo Lee form the left-handed core, but the right-handed depth behind them is thinning.

Reds: right-handed depth and a premium slider

The Reds can stack Sal Stewart, Eugenio Suárez, Matt McLain, Dane Myers and Ke'Bryan Hayes from the right side around switch-hitter Elly De La Cruz. That construction is precisely what can extend a left-hander who has struggled to sequence predictable strikes.

Chase Burns is listed as the confirmed starter, and his slider is the matchup's defining pitch. He handled the Giants earlier this season, although that result means little against a remade lineup. The larger question is workload: Burns described his last start as “running out of gas, getting a little fatigued,” according to MLB.com.

That fatigue is a reason to expect some runs both ways, but the Reds' scoring path is the cleaner one. Their bullpen is in better immediate shape than the Giants', even with Luis Mey likely limited after back-to-back appearances.

Oracle Park: cool air, but the wind adds a little carry

First pitch is a night game with temperatures around 62°F and no meaningful rain threat. The bigger variable is a moderate west or west-northwest wind, roughly 14–17 mph early, which can push the ball toward center or right-center and partially offset Oracle Park's usual marine air.

This is not a typical hitters' night, but it is not a dead night either. The temperature will fall as the game moves into twilight, and the deep outfield still rewards line drives more than routine fly balls. For a Reds team that can land extra-base damage in the gaps, the park setup is workable.

Prediction: Whisenhunt's margin for error is too small

The clearest edge is the Reds' team total. Whisenhunt has shown two profiles, and the most recent version was hittable when the fastball command dipped. If patient right-handed bats force him into deep counts, the Giants will have to lean on a bullpen that used Hentges on consecutive days and Brubaker in a multi-inning role.

Burns' own fatigue and first Oracle Park start add some risk for the Reds' bullpen, but that group enters in better condition. Even if this becomes a slightly higher-scoring game, the scoring direction is likelier to come from the road side.
